The Pilates Method
Joseph H. Pilates was born in 1883 in Mönchengladbach, Germany, near Dusseldorf. As a child he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. Pilates overcame his physical limitations with gymnastics, diving, skiing and bodybuilding. He studied ancient Greek and Roman exercise programs and Yoga. From this experience he developed a revolutionary method of Physical and Mental conditioning, which he called "Contrology".
Pilates' method of Contrology refers to the use of the mind to control the muscles. It is an exercise program that focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of neutral alignment of the spine and strengthening the deep postural muscles that support this alignment, which are important to help alleviate and prevent back pain.
The Pilates Method reconditions form the inside out. It is a gentle, sophisticated and safe exercise program. Each one-hour session is designed to tone, strengthen and lengthen the entire body while creating ease and flexibility in the joints.
While engaging in your Pilates practice, you will focus on the following principles; concentration, control, centering, efficient flowing movement, precision and breathing.
